What is Travertine?

The word ‘travertine’ is derived from the Italian travertino, which is actually derivation from the Latin word tiburtinus ‘of Tibur.’ Its namesake is also the origin of Tivoli, which is a district near Rome.

Naturally, Travertine is one of the most popular building materials across Italy. It is known for its stunning and unique texture.

Travertine in its natural environment comes from limestone deposited through mineral springs, typically hot springs, and it has a very special appearance, a combination of aged rock, natural stone veins, or even a fibrous look formed when certain minerals are dissolved by groundwater.

Another cool fact about Travertine is that across Europe, in counties like Croatia, Italy, and Turkey, Travertine forms natural lakes and dams across the landscape.

No other natural stone product has the same texture level or can deliver the same caliber of finish. Its weathered look characterizes the classic, distinct appearance of Travertine.

Similar to most natural stone, Travertine is exceptionally durable. This stone’s hardness rating is comparable to marble, but unlike other types of stone, it handles extreme temperature changes very well. Another reason why Travertine Stone Fireplaces are so highly sought after.

Homeowners and designers who want the beauty of natural stone, but find most options in this category cost-prohibitive should consider Travertine. Although Travertine is still considered a luxury option, lightweight partial cast travertine is much more cost-effective than granite, marble.

Lightweight Travertine stone fireplaces are produced from a cast mix poured in conjunction with EPS foam forms the perfect blend of lightweight strength and durability. With a minimum of half an inch of cast limestone material, supported by EPS foam results in a product that can be up to 70% lighter than its full cast counterparts.

This significant weight reduction reduces the product’s overall sale price, engineering costs, installation, and transportation costs of the product.

The final benefit comes from CNC technology, which can machine EPS into an unlimited amount of shapes and profiles—giving lightweight masonry products a massive advantage over traditional full cast alternatives.
